I ordered the garden soil last week, and we filled the raised beds yesterday. We were lucky enough to have a nice sunny day without gale force winds or rain, which is what all of our Saturdays have been like. It makes for interesting soccer and baseball games, that’s for sure.
Luke was a big help, especially when it came time to pointing out unearthed spiders, beetles, and tiny plastic weapons. Seriously, we found a miniature battle ax and sword, which he played with for ages while we shoveled and raked and wheelbarrowed. Next up: the Bunny Force Field (fencing).
It was a lovely morning. The boys made me a special breakfast, the weather was warm and sunny, and I was doing a little light yard work. I was working on a particularly large prickly weed in the backyard, when I sunk my pitchfork into the ground and heard a strange squeaky breathy sound. Like air escaping from a ball. But then it was followed by a few short squeals, which didn’t sound at all like a toy.
When I noticed something small and furry trying to crawl away, I realized that I had discovered a nest of bunnies. This is the part where I called for Dan’s help. I didn’t have the stomach for it: following the trail of blood, finishing the job if necessary, and disposing of the corpses so that the dog wouldn’t eat them.
You would think that this set me off gardening for the day, but, you see, I’m not a fan of rabbits. We have a serious over-population problem around here. They have eaten every one of the crocuses and most of the tulips. I’m more than a little nervous about how to keep them out of your soon-to-be-planted garden. Luke has suggested displaying a tiny rabbit skeleton to scare of the others, an idea he has been working on since Halloween. So maybe we’ll skip the scarecrow and work on a scarerabbit instead. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Anything to avoid the in-cold-blood-with-a-pitchfork method.
We have discovered a beautiful and inspiring new music CD: Playing for Change - Songs Around the World. Producer Mark Johnson recorded artists all over the world singing classic songs like “Stand by Me” and “Biko.” And then he managed to edit them all together, weaving their voices together as if they had been singing together for years instead of being strangers separated by thousands of miles. Really, just very amazing.
